All necessary assistance will be provided

Brussels, 11/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The extraordinary European Council in Brussels on Friday 11 March expressed its condolences to Japan and the states of the Pacific struck by an earthquake and then a tsunami, and assured them of its support. EU heads of state or government stand ready to help the governments and people affected, and have asked EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and the European Commission to make available any assistance required.

“We learned with great concern the news of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that today struck Japan and the Pacific region. We express our condolences and support to the governments and the people affected. In addition to national responses, we have asked the High Representative and the Commission to mobilise all appropriate assistance”, the European Council states. (A.N./transl.rt)
