Brussels, 07/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - At 8.00am on Monday 7 March, the Austrian and Polish registries of online transactions in the European carbon market resumed normal operations. The go-ahead was announced by the European Commission on Friday evening following its review of the independent reports on the security of their respective registries submitted by the two member states.
This decision by the Commission has brought to 15 the number of registries which have re-opened after the suspension of transactions at 7.00pm on 19 January. Behind this provisional measure, lay cyber attacks on a number of national registries. The Commission says that Austria and Poland had provided “reasonable assurances” that the minimum security requirements have been put in place since the attacks which damaged the integrity and reputation of the European carbon market set up by the ETS directive.
Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway (non-EU country taking part in the ETS), Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and the United Kingdom have all already been given Commission approval to resume normal EU emissions trading scheme operations.
