S&D MEPs fact-find about the Roma

Brussels, 04/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of Socialist MEPs (S&D) headed by Sylvie Guillaume, will be on a fact-finding mission in Aubervilliers near Paris on 8 February to examine the situation of the Roma community in France. In a press release, the MEP explains that rather than visiting an illegal campsite, she had decided to examine the successful integration of the Roma community in France because representatives of the present French governments want people to think that it is only possible to integrate the Roma in their countries of origin, and the experiment in Aubervilliers shows that this is not the case. During the visit, the MEPs will meet with representatives of Roma organisations and local elected officials, including the mayor of Aubervilliers. After the June 2009 European elections, the S&D Group set up a working group to look solely at the Roma question. After the controversy surrounding the brutal deportation from France of thousands of Roma in the summer of 2010, several fact-finding missions have been arranged (to Serbia, Hungary and Bulgaria) to examine the way the Roma live in the EU, explained Guillaume.
