Brussels, 21/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - Donald Tusk, the prime minister of Poland, which will take over from Hungary at the helm of the European Union in the second half of this year, hopes to see more speedy progress by the Serbia and Croatia in their bid to join the EU. Speaking on Wednesday 19 January 2011, Tusk said that he had not ruled out the possibility that during the Polish Presidency, progress could be made in the enlargement process, particularly for Croatia's accession and speeding up talks with Serbia. After a meeting with the President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, in Warsaw on Monday 17 January, the Polish prime minister said that the negotiations with Croatia might be finalised during the Polish Presidency. Enlargement is a key priority for both Hungary, which holds the current presidency, and Poland. AFP reported, however, on Wednesday 19 January that Hungary's ambassador to Croatia, Gabor Ivan, hopes that Croatia will conclude the EU accession talks at the end of June (during the Hungarian Presidency), as is desired by Croatia. Serbia is hoping to enter accession negotiations with the EU in the spring of 2012 and wants to make progress in the meantime in talks with Kosovo due to be launched under the auspices of Brussels.
