€15 million to support national health programme

Brussels, 10/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - The EU has announced its plan to support the financing of the Health Sector Modernisation Programme (HSMP II) in Syria. This agreement, with an envelope of €15 million, covers the second phase of this programme, over four years. The funding agreement will be signed in Damascus on 13 December by the European ambassador, Vassilis Bontosoglo.

The EU is considered one of the main contributors to the development of the health sector in Syria and its contribution to the funding of the HSMP programme now stands at €39 million, including this latest funding. In addition to its support for the programme, the EU has been involved in programmes for reproductive health, transmissible diseases (AIDS, tuberculosis), vaccination campaigns against risks of epidemics (various strains of influenza) and in poverty-reduction schemes.
