Dialogue EU wants to facilitate between Belgrade and Pristina could be delayed

Brussels, 30/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - The planned dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, which the EU pledged to facilitate, could be delayed as a result of the unexpected resignation of President of Kosovo Fatmir Sejdiu, interim President Jakup Krasniqi said on Thursday 30 September. “It would perhaps be better to wait for new institutions to be put in place which could assume the responsibility for talks with Serbia,” he is quoted by AFP as saying in an interview with the daily Koha Ditore. Krasniqi did not rule out, however, technical-level discussions being begun. A resolution prepared jointly by the EU and Serbia and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 9 September (see EUROPE 10211) provides for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina to promote cooperation, improve the living conditions of their peoples and make progress on their way towards European integration. The resolution welcomed, too, the European Union's commitment to facilitating discussions. Serbia stated that opening this dialogue would, in no way, constitute recognition of the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo, which Belgrade still views as an illegal act. The authorities in Kosovo have also made it plain that they will not discuss the political status of their country. President Sejdiu resigned on 27 September following a ruling by the Kosovo constitutional court that he had breached the constitution by remaining the leader of his party, the Democratic League of Kosovo, after his appointment as president of Kosovo.
