27/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - A report presented on Monday 27 September by European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli to the European ministers for agriculture, concludes that specific measures for storage and the application of isolation distances could help to limit or avoid the mixing of genetically modified maize with conventional or organic maize. The report, which was prepared by the European Co-Existence Bureau (ECoB) and published by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), suggests that best practice could consist of a distance of between 15 and 50 metres between GM and non-GM crops, in order to avoid cross-pollination. Other practices consisting of time isolation (staggering the flowering periods of the GM and non-GM fields) are possible in certain European countries with specific climatic conditions.
