Confidence in eurozone economy improves

Brussels, 29/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - The economic climate indicator was better than expected this July, particularly because of the positive figures registered in Germany, announced the European Commission on Thursday 29 July. The indicator for the 16 countries of the eurozone increased from 99 in June to 101.3 in July, whereas most economists were counting on no change at all. This increase is mainly due to the rebound in the industrial sector, backed up by exports and an improvement in the services sector. Household confidence has also increased from -17 in June to -14 in July, thanks to a significant improvement in Germany's figures. The situation is also better in France, Poland and Italy. On the other hand, it has deteriorated in Spain. For the European Union as a whole, the economic climate indicator rose from 100.3 in June to 102.2 in July. The European Commission announced that the business climate indicator in the eurozone also improved 0.40 in June to 0.66 in July, its highest level since March 2008. This increase was not expected by the markets, which were banking on a figure of 0.394 for July. (O.L./transl.fl)
