10/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - “We do not need new institutions to meet our goals. We need more effectiveness”, commented the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, on Thursday 10 June after a meeting with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, in Berlin. “In short, we need more orthodox and convergent budgetary and economic policies and the instruments on the European level to give the necessary orientations and guidance” he explained after discussing with Merkel how to improve economic governance - a subject that will be addressed at the European summit next week. Merkel said she wanted a change to the EU Treaties to improve economic governance, but Van Rompuy would rather improvements were made under the existing Treaty, although nothing has been ruled out by the working group he chairs.
