Results meeting concludes “limited progress”

Brussels, 06/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - Drawing up a balance sheet of the five day meeting of senior officials from 153 member countries at the WTO Trade Negotiations Committee, Pascal Lamy admitted on Friday 26 March that there had been only “limited progress” in multilateral negotiations since September 2009. He stated that “the result is not where we want to be. Obviously, some people are disappointed that we were close to our goal but I have not deduced any defeatism at all…Yes, we have achieved some limited progress since 2008 but it is obvious that this is not sufficient to go forward. This will take time”. Commissioner Dacian Cioloº also examined the Doha Round at the Agriculture Council on 29 March and asserted that agriculture was not the stumbling block in talks. Nonetheless, he did stress that certain parts on market access required clarification or adjustment and asserted that he would defend EU agricultural interests. (E.H./transl.fl)
