Towards agreement on support for Greece with IMF?

Brussels, 25/03/2010 (Agence Europe) -The European Council opens on Thursday 25 March with the traditional meeting with the president of the European Parliament. Jerzy Buzek, who declared, “there is no solidarity without responsibility” in connection with Greece, which it is at the centre of concerns. He insisted that although the country needed political support, there was “a precondition. Greece has to prove its responsibility and implement the reforms that had been announced”. Beyond the necessary appeal for a serious Greek approach, progress on a possible support mechanism appeared to be possible on Thursday. If no meeting of eurozone leaders takes place before the beginning of the summit, a meeting of the Eurogroup at a level of heads of state was mentioned during the evening. Discussions between the French and German leaders will, in any case, have allowed for a compromise to have been reached involving both the IMF and bilateral loans. Such a solution, which will be primarily from the IMF, but only as a last resort (if Greece does not manage to refinance itself) and with possible sanctions, could still be discussed with the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, before being submitted to the EU27.
