Strasbourg, 12/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - In a joint resolution from the EPP, S&D, ALDE, Greens/EFA, ECR and GUE/NGL groups, adopted in plenary session in Strasbourg on Thursday 11 February, the European Parliament condemned the continuing and systematic abuses of the human rights, fundamental liberties and democratic rights of the people of Burma/Myanmar by the ruling military junta. Condemning the recent sentence on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Parliament demands her immediate and unconditional release, and that she have the right to take part in the forthcoming elections in 2010. Parliament also urges the Burmese authorities to open a genuine dialogue with the LND party of Ms Aung San Suu Kyi and all opposition parties, and to ensure a free, fair and transparent electoral process which meets international standards. It urges the Burmese authorities to end political arrests, to release prisoners of conscience, including monks, and to halt restrictions on freedom of assembly, association and expression. Parliament also calls on the Chinese, Indian and Russian authorities, to bring pressure to bear in their discussions with the military junta to bring about substantial improvements in the country and to stop supplying arms to the Burmese regime. Parliament calls on the Council to keep the restrictive measures adopted against the Burmese regime in place until real progress is made towards democracy. (E.H./transl.rt)
