Brussels, 04/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - Switzerland has decided to take in two Uyghur inmates from Guantanamo for humanitarian reasons. The Uyghurs had been held in captivity by the United States for several years in Guantanamo without having been accused or without being found guilty, the Swiss government announced on Wednesday 3 February. Bern's decision to take in the two detainees, who had been requested by China in the name of combating terrorism, will “surely undermine” relations between China and Switzerland, Beijing warned on Thursday, saying China wanted these members of the Turkish-speaking and Muslim community living in the north-west region of China to be returned to Chinese territory. The Swiss government has stressed that the decision to take in the two Uyghurs had been taken to help bring about the closure of the US camp in Guantanamo. (B.C./transl.jl)
