Further increase in seizures of counterfeit euro banknotes - 12% drop for coins

Brussels, 12/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - The number of counterfeit euro banknotes seized continues to rise, but the number of counterfeit coins withdrawn from circulation has fallen for the second year running, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Commission revealed on Monday 11 January.

Some 447,000 counterfeit banknotes were taken out of circulation in the second half of 2009, up 8% on the previous six months, according to half-yearly statistics published by the ECB. The €20...
