Belgium to increase security at European Councils

Brussels, 07/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - Belgian authorities announced on Wednesday 6 January that it was to step up security at European summits, after Greenpeace activists managed to get into the central courtyard of the Council building on 11 December, passing themselves off as part of an official procession, despite there being security officers present. A report drafted by the Belgian Home Affairs Ministry complains that priority is given not to security, but to protocol, and that security checks had become too lax. New orders will, then, come into force for the extraordinary summit on the relaunch of economic growth on 11 February. There will be two points of entry: one for heads of state and government, and another for the other members of delegation. For each high-level meeting, an action plan will be prepared to improve cooperation between the police, members of the building's security services and delegations' bodyguards. In principle, each national delegation will have to restrict its size and to have a “steward” responsible for the security of his/her delegation and responsible for cooperation with other security services during the stay in Brussels.
