Brussels, 21/12/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Telecoms Council, which met in Brussels on Friday 18 December, adopted a resolution on a concerted European approach on information network security. The European Commission has recommended an EU-wide policy on the protection of critical information infrastructure. Presenting a common front against cyber-attack has become a matter of urgency, with electronic communications networks and services having become so inter-connected and inter-dependent, if there is not to be general paralysis in the event of a breach of security systems. In its resolution, the Council addresses these issues, providing guidelines for the future. It states, in particular that: - 1) incidents that affect security could undermine users' confidence in the technologies, networks and services;- 2) a high level of network and information security in the European Union is needed to protect citizens' freedoms and rights, including the right of privacy;- 3) all stakeholders have to be made more aware of risk management and have to be provided with risk management tools.
The Commission is expected to present a proposal next year on the future of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA). The Spanish Presidency plans to debate this proposal at the Telecoms Council in May 2010. (I.L./transl.rt)
