Brussels, 07/12/2009 (Agence Europe) - In a set of draft conclusions which the General Affairs Council was preparing to adopt on the evening of Monday 7 December, the Twenty-Seven lamented the fact that Turkey had still not fulfilled its obligations under the Ankara protocol on the extension of the customs union (its ports and airports are still closed to Cypriot operators), nor made any progress towards the normalisation of its relations with Cyprus. "Progress is now expected without further delay", stated the draft conclusions, which were still under discussion as we were going to press. It was, however, certain that the Council would not grant Cyprus's request for further sanctions against Turkey, such as the suspension of additional chapters in its accession negotiations. It was expected that Ankara would be called on actively to support the negotiations for the reunification of Cyprus under the aegis of the UN. (H.B./trans.fl)
