21/08/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 20 August, the Swedish government announced its contribution to the rule of law mission in Iraq (EUJUST LEX), which is responsible for training high-level staff and promoting cooperation between the legal, prison and police systems of Iraq. Sweden's contribution will consist of four people, to be deployed in the mission offices in Brussels and in the liaison office in Baghdad. The mission EUJUST LEX, which was launched in 2005 and has been headed up since then by Stephen White of Ireland, has thus far organised training for more than 2700 staff members of the Iraqi criminal justice system, through courses and seminars held in the region and in the Member States of the EU taking part in the mission. Last July, its mandate was prolonged for one year and extended to allow it to launch pilot activities on Iraqi soil. (A.By./trans.fl)
