09/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - EU Sports Ministers are to gather on Monday in Brussels for an informal meeting mainly devoted to the fight against doping. Commissioner Viviane Reding will recall that the conditions for Community financing of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WAA) have still not been met. Ministers who took a stance in December 2000 for Community financing (although some, including the British minister, had hoped for intergovernmental financing) should reflect on the track to follow by the WAA meeting on 3 December in Geneva. Ms Reding will also seek to obtain a political signal from ministers on a Community programme to combat doping to be present in the spring by the Commission. She proposes making the year 2004 the European Year for Education through Sport. The specific nature of sport will also be discussed (need, or otherwise, to envisage an article in the treaty and Community competence). Finally, Ms Reding will announce measures aimed at promoting sport for women on the basis of action already undertaken in some countries on the southern Mediterranean rim.
