22/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - Through a written procedure on 9 August, the European Commission approved a decision allowing for the setting up, in 2001, of a development cooperation project between the EU and Latin America and the region of the Caribbean intended to promote democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. The project, entitled "EU/Latin American/Caribbean Conference on the work and co-operation of Ombudsman Institutions" has a Community financial package of 230,000 euro out of a total of 454,000. Planned activities of this action include the organisation of a conference, publication of "best practices" of ombudsman institutions, as well as an exchange of experience on the work of the institutions and the development of increased cooperation between the EU and these regions. The subsidy agreement was concluded with the Danish Centre for Human Rights, located in Copenhagen.
