(eu) ep/laeken summit

13/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with the Monde, on 11 august, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, member of the Green Group in the European Parliament, proposed that to avoid violent clashes between the police and demonstrators that have marked several recent international summits (notably those of the EU in Nice and Gothenburg, but especially that of the G* in Genoa in July), that a sort of "demilitarised zone" be set up around the conference centre where the European Council of Laeken is to be held on 14 and 15 December o this year. Stressing that this summit "may take decisions that go along the lines of greater democratisation" in Europe, Cohen-Bendit proposes that "no police be present in this zone, but that 2000 citizens, parliamentarians, militants (….) so wanting peacefully protect the building where the summit is to be held by their very presence". According to him, the message should be the following: "there it total freedom to demonstrate, no barriers, no red areas, but there is no question of entering the house. The military in both camps must be disarmed".
