THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/montenegro

19/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The President of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, affirmed on Wednesday during an electoral meeting that this Yugoslav republic would be independent by 13 July, the national holiday. Milo Djukanovic's coalition, which won most of the polls for the legislative elections on Sunday, believes this is the "only solution". The opposition, grouped in the "Together for Yugoslavia" list, is against partition of the Yugoslav Federation. We recall that the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy, which met on 11 April in the Contact Group for the Balkans, recalled their opposition to the secession of Montenegro, and called for a "democratic Montenegro in a democratic Yugoslavia". Such a process of discussion between Belgrade and Podgorica, excluding all unilateral action, will allow the international community to pursue its political, economic and financial support in Montenegro, added the Contact Group.
