14/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - European cities make commitment for climate. On Thursday 15 October, the Covenant of Mayors and its sister initiative, launched in 2014, Mayors Adapt will join forces in the fight against climate change. Hundreds of mayors and elected representatives of European cities committed to action for the climate will meet in the European Parliament debating chamber to show their support for the new EU climate and energy goals to 2030 and their determination to work together on mitigation and adaptation. The event will highlight the commitment of key players if COP 21 is to be a success. The Covenant of Mayors, which was launched in 2008, made local elected representatives players in the implementation of EU climate targets. Six years later, 6,000 cities, home to 360 million European citizens, have voluntarily pledged to go beyond the targets by putting in place sustainable energy action plans. (AN)
