23/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - Asia Bibi's appeal to be examined. On Wednesday 22 July, the Supreme Court in Pakistan agreed to examine the appeal lodged by Asia Bibi. This Christian was given the death sentence in 2010 for blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad, which Bibi denies. Her lawyers lodged an appeal at the end of November at the Supreme Court. At the end of October 2014, following confirmation of the death sentence, the European Union expressed its hope that this verdict would be appealed at the Supreme Court (see EUROPE 11180). On 26 March 2015, 68 MEPs from 17 countries and all the different parliamentary groups called on the President of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain, to pardon Asia Bibi (see EUROPE 11286). The Court will soon set a date for beginning the examination of the appeal. (CG)
