COUNCIL OF EUROPE / (ae) ukraine

31/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - PACE has not ruled out suspending voting rights. According to a resolution adopted by the Council of Europe's parliamentary assembly (PACE) on Thursday 30 January, the Ukrainian authorities should enter open, honest and effective negotiations with the opposition to seek a speedy, broad consensus on geopolitical alignment, pursuit of democratic development and constitutional order in the country. Abrogation of anti-demonstration laws and the resignation of the government would make a start, says PACE. At the moment, PACE will not suspend voting rights for the Ukrainian delegation, but keeps the option open for the April sitting if serious violations of human rights continue or if the Maidan demonstrations are put down.
