ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) media

According to analysts, the world financial crisis is beginning to have an impact on the US media giants also. Thus, News Corp has announced a fall of 30% in its profits for the first quarter 2008 and foresees a decline for the whole of 2008 up to 10-15%, due to the fall in advertisement spending. Disney, which only depends on advertising for 20% of its income, is also in danger with a fall in profits of 13% in the last quarter. It plans to step up promotional offers to support demand. Viacom and Time Warner have also revised their annual forecasts downwards. The end of the American presidential campaign will have adverse effects as well. Advertisement spending linked to the election in fact accounted for some $3 billion this year, most of this amount being invested in TV advertising commercials. (I.L./transl.jl)
