Brussels, 16/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 15July, the Council of the EU failed to reached a decision on whether to authorise the marketing in the EU of two genetically modified organisms for human and animal consumption.
The two Commission proposals were examined in order to authorise the commercialisation of genetically modified soya (A2704-12) and products containing genetically modified cotton (LLcotton 25).
Both authorisation requests were made by Bayer CropScience AG in 2005.
Animal fee containing this GMO and other products that contain them made from this cotton with the same uses than traditional cotton (with the exception of crops) were targeted.
Soya market authorisation targeted foodstuffs, food ingredients and animal feed with GMO derived products or contents.
The Commission formed its proposal on the basis of favourable opinions made by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Member states meeting at the competent regulatory committee was unable to reach an opinion, which is why the Council tackled the dossier.
The latter was unable to decide through the qualified majority required for deciding. It will therefore be up to the Commission to take a decision. (A.N./trans/rh)
