THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/allowances

10/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - There is great unease amongst British Conservatives at the European Parliament following the revelation that parliamentarians have used secretarial allowances for dubious payments to members of their own families. Brought into question for having taken advantage of the flexibility of the current rules of procedure (now under review, as often in the past), Giles Chichester and Den Dover resigned last week from their responsibilities within the Tory delegation at the EP. Mr Chichester will no longer head the delegation and Mr Dover will no longer ensure discipline during voting in his capacity as chief whip. Other Conservative MEPs have since been brought into doubt by the UK press. All argue that their behaviour has not been inappropriate and that they have not breached the rules in force in Parliament.
