27/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - The committee on the promotion of quality of life, human exchange and culture, one of the three EMPA (EuroMed Parliamentary Assembly) committees, met in Rome on Monday 26 February. Main points on the agenda were the preparation of the plenary session in Tunis, on 16-17 March, and discussion on protecting the Mediterranean marine environment on the basis of the strategy outlined by the EuroMed environment ministers during their meeting in Cairo on 20 November last. The next point was on the migratory flow from the Mediterranean and Africa. The aim is to take stock of the joint initiatives taken by the EU and its Mediterranean partners and the role to be played by the parliaments. At the end of the day, the members of the parliamentary committee were to tackle implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expression, adopted in Paris on 20 October 2005. The role of culture and new technologies as factors of development and mutual understanding will also be the subject of an exchange of views, mainly on the proposal to create a Euro-Mediterranean university.
