04/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the end of their annual meeting in Manchester on 22-25 November 105 cities belonging to the EUROCITIES network adopted the “Declaration of Manchester” (EUROPE 9317 and 9312). This text outlines the orientations on how cities can strengthen their position in the knowledge society. It will also serve as a basis for EUROCITIES' work programme in 2007. a press release explained that the programme includes: actions for promoting “Responsible Public Procurement” and raise citizens” awareness of the social and environmental impact of their purchasing decisions; develop the European Day of the Entrepreneur Initiative; the commitment of cities spreading the benefits of information technologies to all their citizens. In Manchester, Gérard Collomb, Senator Mayor of Lyon took over as president of EUROCITIES from Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, for a mandate of two years. (mg)
