28/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a speech delivered at Alpbach in Austria on 27 August at the opening of the Europäisches Forum Alpbach on the “Quest for Certainty and Security”, European External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner repeated that a closer link had to be established between EU internal and external policies. That 70% of Europeans would welcome a real foreign and security policy shows that such a policy would also “contribute to the European Union's democratic legitimacy”, said the Commissioner, arguing in particular for an effective neighbourhood policy, which, in her opinion, would be a “security policy for Europe”, increasing stability without creating an “accession perspective”. In her speech, Ms Ferrero-Waldner also stressed the EU's commitment in Lebanon and said that she would take part in the international conference to be held in Stockholm to discuss further concrete aid measures.
