Brussels, 28/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a declaration on Monday, the Finnish Presidency welcomed the signing of an agreement on Saturday between the Government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army on the cessation of hostilities in northern Uganda. It also supports the peace talks being held in Juba under the auspices of the Government of Southern Sudan. The EU commends both parties and the mediators for this important breakthrough, encouraging them to cooperate closely to ensure successful implementation of the agreement. It believes the agreement on cessation of hostilities is an important step towards a lasting solution to the conflict, in line with Uganda's obligations to the International Criminal Court and under international law (Ed.: which means there can be no impunity for war crimes).
