Conditions for deployment of "Essential Harvest" mission seem to be met

Brussels, 21/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - The North Atlantic Council met on Tuesday afternoon in Brussels to hear a report by General Joseph Ralston after his visit Monday to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. While there he was able to measure up the extent of concessions made by the Skopje authorities for facilitating the deployment of the 3,500 men in the "Essential Harvest" mission envisaged by NATO for collecting weapons from the Albanian guerrilla force. It is mainly a matter of repositioning their troops on the ground in order to facilitate NATO's task, as well as suspending all aircraft and helicopter flights over sensitive areas. Conditions now seem met for this deployment despite many violent incidents that again flared up during the night between Monday to Tuesday.
