On Wednesday 16 September, MEPs meeting for the plenary session in Strasbourg adopted the own-initiative report on inequalities between women and men in the field of health and sex-specific conditions (see EUROPE 13894/16) by 390 votes in favour, 218 against, and 29 abstentions.
The text, spearheaded by Billy Kelleher (Renew Europe, Irish), calls on the European Commission to draw up a European strategy for women’s health that is accompanied by indicators, monitoring, and its own funding.
The report also calls for better representation of women in clinical trials, and for collecting sex-disaggregated health data. According to the data cited, 72% of clinical trials for medicines do not yet include such data, while in 2020, only 5% of global research and development funding was devoted to women’s health.
In addition, MEPs reiterated their support for the ‘My Voice, My Choice’ European citizens’ initiative and their call for sexual and reproductive health and rights, including the right to safe, legal, and accessible abortion, to be included in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
