28/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 27 September in Brussels, the European commissioner for agriculture, Dacian Cioloº, confirmed his intention of putting European cereal intervention stocks back on the market “before the end of the year” (EUROPE 10221). During the Agriculture Council, Cioloº explained that he was very attentively following price rates, which were particularly high this year. He emphasised that “the situation is not similar to 2007”. At that time, the stocks of the main exporting countries were at a quite low-level. His services will wait until the end of October to get a clearer idea about the situation on the European market, before making any intervention decision. Cereal production in the European Union is expected to be above 285 million tonnes this year (130 million tonnes of wheat), as opposed to 255 million in 2007. EU stocks have risen to 5.3 million tonnes in the EU (230,000 tonnes of wheat and 5,070 millions tonnes of barley). (L.C./transl.fl)
