11/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on Wednesday 10 March, the European Parliament condemned police and legal action taken against the Polish Union in Belarus (UPB) (the UPB was democratically elected in 2005 and 2009 but has still not been recognised by the authorities). The EP also condemned any attempts by the authorities to impose a new leader on the Polish community. MEPs called for the release of political activists and prisoners of conscience. The resolution also calls for guarantees of freedom of expression and association, freedom of political parties (particularly the Belarus Christian Democrat party), religious toleration and the implementation of conditions likely to promote the activities of civil society, NGOs and the independent media in the country. The Belarus authorities are also urged to refrain from imposing measures to control Belarus internet sites. (H.B./transl.fl)
