EU Member States adopt position to criminalise breaches of European sanctions

At the ‘Justice and Home Affairs’ Council held in Luxembourg on 9 June, the Member States approved a political agreement (‘general approach’) on drafting new legislation to make the violation of EU restrictive measures a criminal offence.

The European Commission’s proposal for a directive, which aims to limit the circumvention of sanctions and strengthen their application, was issued in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine on 5 December 2022 (see EUROPE...
