Commission proposals on extending qualified majority to certain aspects of taxation and social security do not aim to increase powers - Unanimity remains the rule in these areas

Strasbourg, 15/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission hoped with its suggestions on tax and social security to accomplish a "lucid and volontarist" task and set aside "any ideological reasoning", said the Commissioner responsible for institutional reforms, Michel Barnier, in presenting to the Parliament the "complementary contribution" to the Intergovernmental Conference concerning extension of qualified majority to the "internal market" aspects of the taxation and social security...
