Joint Committee meeting in Ankara postponed as Turkey wishes to reduce freedom of action of European delegation

Brussels, 22/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - The EP Delegation for relations with the Turkish parliament has decided not to go to Ankara where a meeting of the EU/Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee is scheduled for 22 and 23 March, as the Turkish authorities had refused to allow the Delegation, headed by German Green member Daniel Cohn-Bendit, to visit Leyla Zena in prison. The Kurdish parliamentarian had been awarded the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize in 1995.
