According to WindEurope, Europe installed 8.8 GW of new wind energy capacity during the first half of 2026, including 7.1 GW in the European Union. Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain drove this momentum. This capacity is split between onshore and offshore wind turbines, with 74% onshore and 26% offshore, of which 2.3 GW were recently connected to the grid.
This means that Europe has now reached wind energy capacity of 311 GW, including 252 GW in the EU. WindEurope predicts continued growth in installations, reaching a total installed capacity of 436 GW in Europe by 2030, including 342 GW in the EU.
Moreover, WindEurope states that “European governments plan to auction support for more than 24 GW of wind energy capacity in the second half of 2026”. During the first half of 2026, “capital raised for new wind projects in Europe amounted to €9 billion”, which “made it possible to finance 5.2 GW of new capacity, which will be installed over the coming years”.
