01/09/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission launched, on Tuesday 1 September and running until 24 November, a consultation and a call for evidence on a possible revision of the EU rules governing jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in cross-border civil and commercial disputes (Brussels Ia Regulation). According to a press release, this will help assess the effectiveness of the current rules and identify possible improvements to strengthen legal certainty, facilitate access to justice, reduce administrative burdens and support the competitiveness of EU businesses operating across borders. The current rules establish common rules to determine which courts have jurisdiction in cross-border disputes and ensure the recognition and enforcement of judgments in all Member States. A recent Commission report identified targeted improvements to modernise the regulatory framework, simplify procedures and better align the rules to digital developments and new litigation practices.
