After a summer marked by heatwaves, drought and fires, on Tuesday 1 September the European Commission will bring together the main agricultural organisations of the European Union to review the consequences for crops and livestock farming.
The European Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, and the Irish Minister for Agriculture, Martin Heydon, will hear from representatives of Copa-Cogeca, which brings together the EU’s farmers’ organisations and cooperatives, European Coordination Via Campesina (ECVC), IFOAM Organics Europe (the European federation for the organic farming sector) and the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA).
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) published its latest bulletin on 24 August, reporting exceptionally hot and dry conditions threatening summer crops in several European regions (see EUROPE 13923/7).
The Commission also notes the mechanisms under the common agricultural policy (CAP) intended to help farmers adapt to periods of drought and heat (https://aeur.eu/f/n7e ), as well as the measures available to prevent fires and restore the affected agricultural and forestry sectors (https://aeur.eu/f/n7f ).
