PFAS - ChemSec denounces biased industry studies on fluoropolymers

The NGO ChemSec is accusing recent studies commissioned by the chemical industry on fluoropolymers - a category of PFAS (forever chemicals) - of showing significant bias as the EU prepares a general restriction on these substances.

According to an analysis published on Monday 31 August by ChemSec, two studies on fluoropolymers, used in particular in non-stick coatings, medical tubing, cables and seals, were allegedly carried out with consultants linked to industry and present the data selectively.

The organisation notably criticises this work for ignoring research by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the OECD and the European Environment Agency.

One of the studies insists fluoropolymers are of “low concern”, an approach which ChemSec says is not recognised by independent researchers or by the international scientific bodies cited.

“This is not science, it is deeply dishonest”, says Jonatan Kleimark, ChemSec’s director of programmes, accusing industry of presenting as scientific work carried out by experts close to the sector.

The European Commission is considering a general ban on PFAS (see EUROPE 13891/8).
