The agreement in the Council of the European Union on Monday 12 December on the suspension of €6.3 billion of cohesion funds for Hungary due to persistent concerns about the protection of the EU’s financial interests demonstrates that the ‘Rule of Law’ regulation is an effective way of pressuring a Member State to carry out reforms in line with fundamental European values(see EUROPE B13082A2).
