German parliament confirms exit of coal by 2038

06/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Friday, 3 July, MPs of the Bundestag adopted the German law endorsing the objective of closing down all coal-fired power stations and mines by 2038 (see EUROPE B12405A29). Heavily criticised by environmental NGOs for being too far in the future, this law provides, in particular, for €40 billion to be granted to mining regions to help them in this transition and a total of €4.35 billion in compensation for coal-fired power station operators.
