Filippo Grandi calls on EU to help Greece urgently transfer at least 20,000 people from Greek islands to mainland

On Friday, 21 February, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, launched an appeal for “urgent action” to address the “increasingly desperate” situation of refugees and migrants in camps on the Greek islands.

Conditions in settlements in Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Kos and Leros “are woefully inadequate and have continued to deteriorate since the High Commissioner last visited in November last year”, UNHCR said in a statement.
