The European Commission is expected to adopt an emergency measure very soon to order a six-month closure of cod fishing in eastern Baltic waters.
At the June Fisheries EU Council, the Commission had already announced such an intention, following the publication of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) opinion on the poor state of the eastern Baltic cod stock (see EUROPE B12277A2). The advice proposed a total allowable catch (TAC) of zero for this stock in 2020.
