17/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Federal President of the CDU, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, is the new German Defence Minister, replacing Ursula von der Leyen, elected President of the European Commission on 16 July effective as of 1st November. As a NATO member country, Germany has been accused several times by the United States of a too-low level of military spending, which represents only 1.2% of its GDP. The Allies have committed to a 2% expenditure target by 2024. (CG)
